Text Box: Agnus Dei Academy Earth Science: Letter to Parents

Dear Parents:

We at RCA welcome you and your child to our class and we look forward getting to know their unique personality.  This course is intended to be an enjoyable, stimulating, and somewhat challenging study of Earth Science.  Our goal is not only have your child learn the subject matter, but to also learn critical thinking, skills in respectful listening and discussion both in live meetings and in the discussion threads, self discipline with respect to deadlines, and study skills that will see them through college and beyond.

Your role in this course is support person. You will need to encourage and monitor your student intermittently while in online class, install parental controls on the computer, and the upkeep of computer/peripherals, and  monitor your child’s progress with completing assignments from the lesson plans.   Please communicate with the instructor or the department head as often as you have observations, concerns, suggestions or questions.

Your child will have an account with the school’s secure, online grade book that provides parents and students with 24 X 7 access to grades. You will have access to all the course information through the student link. Graded tests will be sent to both parents and students.  Pass-fail grades will be given at the end of the year to all students. If you desire an overall average you may request that. You  will need to check the course announcements at least weekly.

You will always receive a copy of any email sent to your student.  Your child will complete easy “kitchen type labs” using easily obtained items from grocery or hardware stores. Your child will be assigned chapter quizzes and unit Tests (every 2-4 chapters) You will receive copies of graded tests and exams. Tests are to be proctored by parents and adults— not siblings! That means you must observe your child during the test and make sure all the rules of that test are followed (i.e. keep it closed book)  an end of year summary report and recommendations.

We cannot replace the daily supervision of your child’s studies. We can make your job easier by suggestions, live help and hopefully interesting discussions, lesson planning, grading,  and recommending  helps to you as you request them. But you must not relinquish your role as supervisor, advisor, motivator, and encourager.

We look forward to getting to know your child this coming fall!  It’s going to be a great year!

God Bless,

Mrs. Harrison
